課程目標
This course is designed to engage engineering mathematics needed by scientists and engineers, in a setting helpful to undergraduate students. It consists of many mathematical topics, all of which are related by the expedient of being useful in courses and subsequent careers in science and engineering.
The objective of this course is that by the end of the semester, you will have
• used standard mathematical tools common to engineers;
• solved standard ODEs of interest to materials science;
• analyzed statistical sets of data using standard mathematical concepts;
• known the concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors;
• solved linear systems using matrices.

評量方式
No. | 項目 | 百分比 | 說明 |
1. | Team Collaboration | 5% | Form a MIXED cultural team of at most 4 people. There must be at least one Taiwanese student in the gro1up. On this ”international team,” you need to work together in class to solve the drills and may have a chance to demonstrate your work to other teams in class. Also, the purpose of having a team in the class is to help each other. Through the discussion in and out of class, all of the members make progress. |
2. | Quiz | 20% | There will be a ten-minute quiz from 9 am to 9:20 am on every Wednesday. On each quiz, each team will solve two questions chosen from our drills and examples. Quizzes are closed-book and closed-note. No electronics, including calculators, cell phones, or smart watches are allowed. Some formulas and tables may be provided. |
3. | Team Homework | 15% | There will be four team homework assignments in this course. Each team will submit the homework on each topic. The homework is to find at least three applications of what you have learned on each topic. |
4. | Midterms40% | (20% each). There are two mid-term exams in this course. The mid terms are scheduled on – Mid-term 1: October 09 in class. – Mid-term 2: November 13 in class. Mid-terms are closed-book, closed-notes. No electronics, including calculators, cell phones, or smart watches are allowed. Mid-terms will be used to assess demonstration of the learning objectives and may include the combinations of true & false and work-out problems. Some formulas and tables may be provided. | |
5. | Final Exam | 20% | The date of the final exam will be on December 16. The final is closed-book, closed-notes. No electronics, including calculators, cell phones, or smart watches are allowed. The final is cumulative and may include the combinations of true & false and work-out problems. Some formulas and tables may be provided. |
